Walmart Canada plans to open a two-level Supercentre at Calgary’s Southcentre Mall in 2028, taking over the space previously occupied by Hudson’s Bay.

The retailer announced the project on October 20, saying the new store will be approximately 165,000 square feet at the shopping centre near Macleod Trail and Anderson Road S.E. Walmart will become an anchor tenant at the mall, which is owned and operated by Oxford Properties.

The Southcentre store is a relocation of Walmart’s existing Supercentre at 9650 Macleod Trail S.E., not an additional Walmart location in south Calgary. The company has not provided an exact opening date or specified when the existing store will close.

What the new Walmart will offer

According to Walmart, the new store will offer a full grocery assortment including fresh produce, meat, seafood, deli, bakery, dairy, frozen foods and pantry items. General merchandise will include clothing, electronics, home goods, health and wellness products and seasonal merchandise.

The location is also expected to include a Walmart Pharmacy, a Vision Centre and in-store pickup and delivery services. The company has not detailed how the different departments will be arranged across the two floors.

Replacing a former department-store anchor

Southcentre’s former Hudson’s Bay space has been vacant following the retailer’s closure. The planned Walmart will fill a major department-store location and change the mall’s retail mix by adding a full grocery offering.

Tori Nixon, vice-president of retail leasing at Oxford Properties, said Walmart’s arrival is part of the mall owner’s effort to adapt its properties as shopping habits change. Walmart real-estate director Shawn Fujiki described the move as an expansion of customer convenience in south Calgary.

Part of Walmart’s wider Alberta expansion

The Southcentre project is included in Walmart Canada’s previously announced $6.5-billion, five-year investment in Canadian stores and supply-chain infrastructure. It is the fourth new Alberta Supercentre planned under that investment.

Walmart said a Fort McMurray Supercentre was scheduled to open October 22, while new stores in Edmonton and on Tsuut’ina Nation are expected in 2027. At the time of its announcement, Walmart reported operating 59 stores in Alberta and employing more than 15,000 people across the province.

Walmart has not announced a construction start date, the number of employees expected at the new Southcentre location or what will happen to the existing Macleod Trail premises after the relocation.
