Electronic Arts is closing Edmonton-based BioWare, the developer behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and ending development of the next Mass Effect project. The company announced the decision on October 21, 2026, as part of a change in its game development priorities.

Founded in Edmonton in 1995, BioWare became known internationally for story-driven role-playing games including Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Electronic Arts acquired the studio in 2007.

EA ends early work on next Mass Effect game

EA said a small BioWare team was working on the early stages of another Mass Effect game. That project will not proceed, and the Edmonton studio and workspace will close. The publisher said it is concentrating resources on fewer large development projects, while continuing work on Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.

Employees and Edmonton impact

EA said it would help affected employees explore other opportunities within the company. It did not provide an official count of BioWare positions affected or a specific closing date. BioWare said its immediate focus was on supporting its team through the transition.

The closure marks the end of one of Alberta's best-known video game studios. BioWare's games attracted audiences around the world through their stories, characters and player choice.
