An earthquake measuring approximately magnitude 4 struck the Rocky Mountains north of Canmore early Friday morning, with reports of shaking reaching Calgary.
Earthquakes Canada recorded the event at 4:46 a.m. MDT on October 16, approximately 35 kilometres north of Canmore in the Banff area.
The agency’s detailed earthquake report lists a magnitude of 4.3 on the local magnitude scale and places the quake about five kilometres beneath the surface. Its general recent-earthquakes listing displays a different estimate of 3.7.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the same event at magnitude 4.0 and estimated its depth at approximately 8.3 kilometres. Its location estimate was about 31 kilometres north-northeast of Banff.
These figures reflect differences between the agencies’ published measurements. Earthquake magnitudes and locations can be revised as seismic observations are reviewed.
People in Banff and Canmore reported feeling the shaking, and reports extended as far as Calgary. There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage in Friday’s reporting.
Earthquakes Canada is inviting people who felt the tremor to complete its online questionnaire. Those observations help researchers map how strongly an earthquake was felt in different communities.
