The federal government will begin accepting applications on November 16 for a new $5,000 completion bonus aimed at tradespeople who finish apprenticeships and obtain certification in eligible Red Seal trades.

Employment and Social Development Canada confirmed the application date on Friday, October 23. The Red Seal Completion Bonus is part of the government's Team Canada Strong skilled-trades initiative, which aims to increase apprenticeship completion and address demand for certified workers.

Who qualifies for the bonus

To qualify, applicants must have completed an apprenticeship and obtained certification in a Red Seal trade designated as eligible in the province or territory where they were certified. Certifications awarded on or after April 1, 2025, may qualify.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons and must not currently be attending high school. Simply working in a trade or holding a trade qualification without completing an eligible apprenticeship does not, by itself, establish eligibility for this particular bonus.

The government says the payment is $5,000 for each eligible Red Seal trade in which a person completed an apprenticeship and received certification. The total is capped at $50,000 across multiple eligible trades.

Application deadlines

People certified between April 1, 2025, and November 15, 2026, must submit their applications by May 31, 2027. Those certified on or after November 16, 2026, have 12 months from their certification date to apply.

All required supporting documents must be submitted within 28 calendar days of starting an application. Otherwise, the applicant will have to begin a new application.

Applications are not yet open. The government encourages potential applicants to review the program and prepare their documents before November 16.

What applicants will need

Applicants should have their Social Insurance Number, mailing address, banking information for direct deposit, trade name, certification date, province or territory of certification, and apprentice identification number ready. An email address is recommended but optional.

Additional documents may be required depending on the province or territory of certification. Protected persons, and some permanent residents whose Social Insurance Numbers begin with a 9, will need to provide proof of status in Canada.

Part of a larger federal trades initiative

Ottawa says the completion bonus is part of an $8-billion Team Canada Strong initiative intended to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal skilled-trades workers over five years.

The national program may also apply to qualifying Alberta journeypersons. Applicants should confirm that their specific trade is designated and that their completed apprenticeship meets the federal rules before assuming they qualify.

The federal government's official Red Seal Completion Bonus page provides eligibility information, and the application portal is scheduled to open November 16.
