AHS says four cases have been confirmed and another two are considered probable. All six people reported eating at the Kinjo location at 200, 7 Mahogany Plaza S.E. on or around Sept. 18. Testing has identified the bacteria involved as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC. Anyone who ate or drank at the Mahogany restaurant on Sept. 18 or 19 may have been exposed, according to AHS. Health officials have not yet identified the source of the infection and are investigating whether there is any ongoing risk. A public health inspection conducted at the restaurant on Sept. 28 found no critical violations. AHS says no additional STEC cases have been linked to the location at this time. The restaurant remains open while the investigation continues. What symptoms should you watch for? STEC can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. Dehydration caused by diarrhea is the most common complication. People experiencing symptoms are being advised to call Health Link at 811 or contact their primary care provider. A stool test may be ordered to check for the bacteria. AHS says people who are sick should stay home from work or school, wash their hands frequently and avoid preparing or sharing food with others. Anyone experiencing diarrhea should also stay out of swimming pools, spray parks and other aquatic facilities for at least two weeks after symptoms have resolved. Public health officials say they are continuing to investigate the source of the outbreak and working to prevent additional illnesses.
